Understanding Data Centers: A Community Conversation
Exploring the impact of data centers on Great Falls and beyond. In a recent knowledge drop session, experts gathered to discuss the growing importance of data centers, driven largely by the surge in AI applications. Roy Alexander from Vision Net kicked things off by highlighting the explosion of new AI technologies and the corresponding need for infrastructure to support them. The Role of Power in Data CentersShane Ed Sweiler from Northwestern Energy weighed in on the critical energy demands that data centers impose on local communities. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring that these new facilities do not burden existing ratepayers. "We are still very much going to make sure that we provide that reliable energy to our current customers..." — Shane Ed Sweiler Shane also discussed the importance of developing a robust grid to support these large energy loads, assuring that both new data centers and current users benefit from the infrastructure improvements. Community Engagement Through the Data Center Task ForceJolene Shelper from Great Falls Development Alliance shared insights about the community's proactive approach to understanding data centers. Following the interest from a major hyperscaler that ultimately withdrew due to energy availability, the community initiated a data center task force. This task force has brought together approximately eighty community members to discuss concerns and educate themselves on various aspects of data centers. In their meetings, they've explored topics ranging from the technical requirements of data centers to the environmental implications, ensuring that all voices are heard in the conversation. Water Usage and SustainabilityConcerns about water usage are paramount in discussions about data centers. As Jolene pointed out, the right partnerships can lead to more sustainable practices, such as closed-loop cooling systems that significantly reduce water consumption. "Most data centers now use less water than an average hotel… because they listened. They understood. Look, water is precious." — Jolene Shelper This perspective emphasizes that with the right technology, data centers can be environmentally friendly and efficient. The Future of Data CentersAs technology continues to evolve, so will the infrastructure supporting it. The conversation highlighted the need for smaller, localized data centers to complement larger facilities, especially as applications like AI and data processing become more integrated into daily life. "This is the next system that could really drive the development of our country and be beneficial to all for economic development for future generations." — Shane Ed Sweiler The insights shared during the session reflect a community that's not just reacting to the needs of the present but is also planning for a sustainable future. As we move forward, it will be crucial for communities to find partners that align with their values and goals. The data center task force is a testament to the importance of collaboration and education in navigating these complex challenges.
